Barcode Genie is a Shopify app that reads price- and weight-embedded scale-label barcodes at Shopify POS, so goods sold by weight ring up at the exact total printed on the label instead of being keyed in by hand. The real catalog product is added to the cart and Shopify's Cart Transform applies the encoded total, so taxes, receipts, and reporting stay attached to the actual product.
A price-embedded barcode carries an item's number and its price inside the barcode digits themselves, so a register rings up the exact total for a variable-weight item such as meat, cheese, or fish without anyone keying a number. Label-printing scales print them on every package they weigh, and Barcode Genie decodes them to a store's own digit convention.
Barcode Genie needs a label-printing scale that encodes price or weight into the barcode — the kind already standing on most deli and butcher counters. No special scanner is required: the POS device camera reads the label, and a connected hardware scanner is used directly when one is present. A built-in test-label generator produces a scannable barcode on screen, so the app can be evaluated with no scale at all.
Barcode Genie reads variable-measure UPC-A and EAN-13 labels, price- or weight-embedded, with the digit convention — PLU length and value format — configurable to match the scale rather than assumed from a particular brand. Barcode Genie also reads GS1 element strings, using the GTIN (AI 01), net weight (AI 310x kilograms or 320x pounds), and price (AI 392x or 393x) fields.
Yes. Barcode Genie matches a scanned label to the product whose variant SKU equals the scale's PLU, so there are no temporary products, no parallel catalog, and no duplicate SKUs to maintain. If a matched product has no usable unit price, Barcode Genie refuses the scan and says so rather than selling the item at a wrong price.
Barcode Genie keeps a per-product decimal remainder, because Shopify inventory counts whole numbers only. Each sale's true weight is added to that remainder, stock is corrected by whole units, and the leftover fraction carries into the next sale, so long-run stock totals stay accurate instead of drifting a little with every cut.
Barcode Genie is for Shopify merchants selling cut-to-order or pre-packed goods priced by weight at a physical counter: butchers, delis, fishmongers, cheesemongers, produce sections, bakeries, and prepared-food counters — anywhere a scale prints the price onto the package before it reaches the register.
